It was Valentines day 2001. Not one of my girlfriends was attached. One had a date, and everyone else was flying solo. So, we made a group effort. All of us whipped out the little black dresses. We looked more like we were going to a funeral than like we were headed out for Valentines day. That was the idea at least. One of the girls even went so far as to cover her head with one of those hats with the tulle on it.

We went to dinner and meandered about town for awhile. We went out dancing. Then we bought some Welch's Sparking Grape Juice and chocolate covered strawberries, and settled in for the night in our comfiest pair of pjs. Girly magazines were spread across my floor as my girlfriends and I talked for hours about how we would like to order one of the models from the magazine, traded make up tips, painted nails, and discussed the latest Survivor episode. We ate the strawberries, and were totally on sugar highs by midnight from the grape juice. Breakfast at Tiffanies was popped into the DVD player, and in our best choral voices we sung the Deep Blue Something Song, named after the movie. About the time Ms. Golightly is standing in the pouring rain and about to embark on the worst possible dramatic kiss ever, all but two of us were fast asleep. It was probably one of the best Valentines days ever. No boys involved. It is proof that the answer to the question 'Are men really necessary?' is No.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-14T04:50:52Z</dcterms:modified>

Valentines for Singles Part II

Valentines Day 2003

It was official. I was nuts. It had officially been the longest 4 years of my life. I had been to emotional hell and back, and was ready to just be crazy forevermore. I had scored a date for Valentines day, made reservations at a swanky establishmnet in OKC. (yes, OKC has swanky establishments you doubters.) I had an evening planned of dinner in the big city. My little black dress was laid out. This was my first real date in awhile. Like date date type of date. Where someone comes to pick you up and you go somewhere. Not like sit on the couch and watch TV type of date. We were leaving at 6:00.

6:00: No date. 6:30: No date. 6:45: Call date, no answer. 7:00 knock on door, is friend John.

John and I had been friends since Freshman year, and had quite a bit in common. We were both very artsy, loved doing many of the same things and were equally involved in different sects on campus. John was not my date. He was standing there looking at me through the door somewhat discombobulated. "I was stood up." I looked down at my little black dress, my hair fixed, my heels, and I looked at the time. "Me too." John laughed. "Wanna go to Applebees?" I whined about how it was Valentines day. Then I remembered the reservations were in my name. "No, how about we go downtown? I have reservations for 7:30."

We were whisked away via Johns car to the swanky downtown establishment for my reservations. We made it just in time. After dinner and a little people watching, we went across the riverwalk to a new martini bar. There was live music playing, and everyone was singing "Sweet Caroline" loudly. People were dancing and we joined them. It wasn't your normal martini bar feel, but what a martini bar should feel like. After returning to my place, we watched breakfast at Tiffany's until we fell asleep in my floor. It ended up an incredible Valentines day. Just me and a really good friend. Not what I had expected, but probably one of my very best dates ever, and it wasn't even really a date. The high hopes, the disappointment, the resignation to a date I loved, but was far from what I had imagined.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-12T14:01:21Z</dcterms:modified>
